Too many times he’d been late—to rehearsals, to hangouts, even to shows. It was getting hard to hold a conversation with him. (Names will be withheld to protect the infected—possible HIPAA violation.) But he wasn’t the only one. We began noticing other friends and acquaintances falling prey to the same virus. They suddenly became one-dimensional, able to focus on only one thing—or rather, one person. They seemed less sharp, their sense of humor gone overnight. It’s sad, really. And it’s incurable; it simply has to run its course. Some survive, but most don’t.

The seed of the destruction, the cause of this virus—the zombie sickness—is falling into love or lust. The worst cases are those who lose their singularity and succumb to actual love. Lust zombies usually return to normal more quickly. The ones hurt the most are the friends left behind, wondering where everyone went. This strange plague inspired the beloved Nuclear Boyz song.
